Westerbeke Overheat 380

New to association and getting familiar with boat.  Ran across attachment in documents provided by previous owner relating to an overheat problem with the 42B4.  Called Westerbeke  and Catalina support trying to find out if it applied to my boat, hull 191.  Catalina support related that it was discovered in earlier models and fixes were made; Westerbeke  said same.  I asked if thermostat should still be at 160 degrees if fixes were made.  I was advised to keep it at 160 degrees.  I had the engine services by my mechanic and he replaced it with a 180 thermostat, as specked by Westerbeke.  He argues to keep it at 180; I’m on the fence.  Any experienced advice appreciated.

Diagnosing Fuel Gauge Problems

The fuel gauge is basically a simple ammeter circuit, that is, the meter is measuring the current thru the fuel sender’s variable resistor ( floating resistive arm…).

+12vdc is supplied to one side of the gauge/meter (from the ignition switch), the other side is carried, via a pink wire, to pin 6 of the 12 pin terminal strip within the engine control pod.  From there it’s connected directly to the tanks variable resistor/arm via the center or main terminal at the tank ( fwd inboard part of tank).  From there, current flows thru that var. resistor and is returned to -12vdc/ground.  From the ground point on the tank, there should be a second wire which carries that ground to either the engine pod or main engine (don’t recall which).  The engine & engine pod have a solid #10 ground wire between them.

Wiring of Terminal Strip at Engine C380 Westerbeke

My terminal strip is not numbered so I call pin/ terminal #1 = green/ black wires (adjacent is heavy red wires).   Color a/ color b denotes color on engine side / color on panel side. ( this is for Westerbekes; Yanmars should be the same functionally, but colors on engine side may be different. Westerbekes see P 48/49 of engine manual)

 

  1.  -12 v / ground.        Green/ black
  2.  +12 v Battery         Red/red
  3.   Temperature sender.   Yellow / brown
  4.   Tach sender.         Brown / grey
  5.   Glow plugs.         Violet / white
  6.   Not used.             Orange / not used (Oil pressure gauge option)
  7.   Alt./ ignition.      Red white / purple. (see term. 9)
  8.   Starter.                White / yellow red
  9.  Alarm power.        Pink / not used (tied to 7)
  10. Not used.             Grey / not used ( charge light option)
  11. Oil pres switch.    Lt. Blue / Lt. Blue black
  12. Water temp switch.  Tan / tan black

Westerbeke Engine Mount Part Numbers

Westerbeke#

40510 for the front

40511 for the rear. They are virtually the same spec other than the rears are designed for a bit more weight.  This is for the Westerbeke 42b four with a Hurth transmission.

Westerbeke’s original part number for the 42b is 36341 however Catalina had different mounts spec’d for this motor in our boats. I managed to get a pn off one of the original ones and dealt with the wb dealer here in Ontario.  The 40510/40511 were originally used on the 35b Westerbeke.

Westerbeke shows no stock if you plug the number in on WB main website but according to my guy they have 25 currently in stock and it is a stocked item.

I decided to stay with OEM parts as they lasted this long and easier to swap out with the same re measurements height etc. About $180 piece

Size of Yanmar Engine Mount Nut

After calls to two distributors and to Yanmar USA, the answer is that it is a M16-1.5, which happens to be almost but not quite the same dimensions as a 5/8th, fine thread.

Don’t force the imperial nut onto the mount stud.

I wanted to let everyone know that I was able to find a current supplier.  Ocean Equipment (in Bend, Oregon) has begun manufacturing them again.  You can’t find them on their website, but you can order by phone.

Engine would run and then die – Racor problem

I chased a problem in the fuel system for a week during our summer trip.  The engine would run and then die, sometimes 1 minute some times 5-10.

At first thought it was fuel related because there was a little bit of a biology / chemistry experiment in the bottom of the Racor bowl.  Changed filters, twice, but problem continued.  Did the fuel line into the jug test.   This separates the engine from the fuel system so you can narrow down the issue.  Jug trick showed that everything from the Racor to the engine was fine.  I inspected the fuel tank and the pickup tube (no screen installed) and they were clean as a whistle.

So I started thinking air leak. Of course by then I had the Racor apart a few times. On a whim I cracked open another Racor filter to get the new gaskets. It turns out

Stopping a Runaway Westerbeke

Question raised about a Westerbeke that wouldn’t shutdown.

The circuit breaker right on the engine may have tripped.
I and others have reported this situation as having occurred in the past.
Westerbeke reports that the breakerspring can weaken over time. I have a spare, which I picked up to replace that on our ’93 B-38 but could not loosen one screw, 3 years ago, so left the old breaker after shooting it up w/ WD-40.
The spare is on-board when I need it!
